Mathew James is a Canadian horn player based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He can also be seen in Saskatoon where he is the acting fourth horn with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. An active performer of new music he is often busy collaborating with other performers and composers on projects and commissions. In addition Mathew is one of the founders and the Artistic Director for Calgary's Timepoint Ensemble. He holds a Post-Masters Certificate in Performance and a Masters degree with distinction from DePaul University in Chicago. As well as a Bachelors of Music Performance from the University of Calgary.
This year he gave the world premiere of Jordan Kusel’s “a cold surrogate, a penance play” for horn, amplification, Max/msp, electronics, and video. He has performed with various new music ensembles in the USA and Canada, as well as orchestras in Illinois, Wisconsin, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
Mathew is also a recipient of the Canadian Council for the Arts' professional musician grant program and has published articles related to performing electronic works for horn, and contemporary performance techniques in the International Horn Society's journal “the Horn Call” and other various publications.
